More Rain Floods Vermont Roads, Spills Over Rivers

With multiple drownings in fast-moving rivers in recent days, Vermont Governor Peter Shumlin is warning people to be extremely cautious about trying to beat the heat at their favorite swimming hole.

Shumlin tells The Associated Press: "That river you thought you always knew, it's not the same as it was two weeks ago."

The comments come hours after crews pulled the body of 26-year-old Steven Orvis from the New Haven River in Bristol.

Orvis disappeared on Thursday, two days after 16-year-old Jesse Belcher of Barre died in a similar swimming accident in the swollen Stevens Branch.

The National Weather Service is predicting the current weather pattern — with high heat and humidity punctuated by heavy rains — to continue through much of next week.
