Massachusetts education officials have awarded $9 million in federal funding to make sweeping improvements at five schools
All five schools, two in Boston, one each in Lawrence, New Bedford and Springfield are classified as underperforming as a result of low scores on standardized tests. In Springfield, school officials will use the $1.5 million awarded to the DeBerry elementary school to hire the Education Innovation Laboratory of Harvard University. The group will manage five schools in Springfield next year. Each school is at risk for a state take-over if test scores don’t improve in three years.
