Shumlin Signs Immigrant Drivers' Privilege Bill

Governor Peter Shumlin has signed a bill that would allow immigrant farm-workers who are in the country illegally to drive in Vermont, with a new type of driver's privilege card.

The bill is designed to allow workers who are in the country illegally, but providing crucial labor on Vermont's dairy farms, to get a new type of state driver's license.

The bill's signing into law comes nearly two years after Vermont State Police stopped a car containing two passengers who were Mexican immigrant farm-workers in the country illegally and turned them over to the U.S. Border Patrol.

One of the two passengers detained by state police, Danilo Lopez, became a leader in the push for the legislation. Now he's facing deportation resulting from that stop.  He's been ordered to leave the country by July 5.
