Vermont Senate Defeats Child Care Unionization Bid

The Vermont Senate has beaten back another bid to pass legislation that would allow child care workers in the state to unionize for the purpose of negotiating subsidies and working conditions with the state.

Lt. Governor Phil Scott ruled an amendment on the issue was not germane to a miscellaneous education bill and an effort to overrule that decision failed to get the required three-quarters majority.

Backers of the unionization effort say they're deeply disappointed, but not giving up.

Child care provider Judy Pransky says Scott's decision effectively labels child care providers as baby sitters, rather than early educators.

There may be an effort to attach the measure to another piece of legislation during the end-of-session rush.
