Holiday extends Mass. state tax deadline 1 day

Massachusetts residents have an extra day to file their state income tax returns.

April 15th falls on the same day as the Patriots' Day holiday, and the state is giving taxpayers until Tuesday to file their Massachusetts returns.

But there is no change in the April 15th federal tax filing deadline, so those returns are due today.

State officials have been urging residents to file their 2012 tax returns electronically, and so far most have done so.

As of last Friday, the Revenue Department says more than 2.2 million taxpayers had filed returns electronically, compared with about 270,000 who filed paper returns the old-fashioned way.

Officials said the average refund on an electronic return was 3.4 days, compared to five days for a paper return.
