Heroin Trafficking Increases in Vermont

Federal, state and local officials are working together to fight a rise in heroin and other drugs in Chittenden County.

They held a press conference Monday to talk about the cooperative efforts in Burlington.

U.S. Attorney Tristram Coffin says over the last six months his office has indicted over 30 defendants in Chittenden County for substantial heroin and cocaine trafficking.

Authorities discussed a similar problem in Rutland last week, where the police chief called the rise in drug addiction "mind boggling."

Most of the drugs are coming in from East Coast cities like New York or cities in western Massachusetts. But they also come from as far away as Philadelphia, Detroit or Chicago.
