Vermont Lawmakers Weigh Pot Decriminalization

A Vermont House committee is taking testimony on a proposal to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Bill Lippert says he wants to scale back the original proposal from decriminalizing possession of two ounces or less to one ounce.

The Hinesburg Democrat also says the committee is unlikely to approve a provision in the original bill that would have decriminalized possession of a small number of marijuana plants.

Public Safety Commissioner Keith Flynn told the panel during Wednesday's hearing that a single marijuana plant frequently grows to produce up to a pound of pot.

He says that doesn't square with the idea of decriminalizing possession of a small amount.
