Vermont Town to Take up Firearms Ordinance

Town officials in Highgate, Vermont are planning to consider an ordinance to bar recreational shooting in residential areas.

The ordinance was requested by residents of several streets who say neighbors firing guns on inadequate backyard ranges are creating a safety hazard.
Vern Brosky III, a federal law enforcement officer and former Air Force member, has led the campaign for the ordinance. Brosky said some neighbors agreed to talk with him and let him tour their shooting ranges. He said one agreed to no longer shoot on his property, and another agreed to restrict it to hunting season. One said he "never misses."

The St. Albans Messenger reports Selectboard Chairman Henry Rainville said he hoped the neighbors could work it out among themselves.
