The organizers of a Vermont gun show say they will allow the display and sale of assault weapons despite a request by the mayor of Barre that the weapons not be displayed in the aftermath of last month's school shooting in Newtown, Conn.
Barre Mayor Thomas Lauzon said the representatives of the Barre Fish & Game Club "were complete gentlemen" during a Monday meeting along with Police Chief Tim Bombardier, but they declined his request to ban the display and sale of military-style assault firearms and high-capacity magazines.
The 30th annual two-day Barre gun show is scheduled to begin Feb. 9.
The Barre-Montpelier Times Argus reports gun show organizer John Simanskas said he was trying to work out a way to conduct background checks on prospective buyers.
