Text Message Scam Hits Massachusetts

Worcester District Attorney Joseph Early Jr. says there's an ongoing scam in which consumers get text messages saying they've won $1,000 Best Buy gift cards.

But the text is from scammers seeking credit card information.

The district attorney says text recipients are directed to a website that looks connected to the electronics retailer, but isn't.

The website asks consumers to provide their credit card info to collect the prize.

Authorities say the scam is widespread and recently made its way to Worcester County.

State police detectives are investigating, and authorities advise people who get such a text to report the scam to their cell phone carrier.
