Vermont Prison Inmates Helping Rehab Potatoes

Some Vermont prison inmates are helping some needy families get more to eat on Thanksgiving by packaging potatoes at the Windsor prison.

Inmates at the Southeast State Correctional Facility in Windsor have been cleaning up potatoes as part of the Salvation Farms program.

Without the inmates, the potatoes might have been plowed back into the ground, but now they will be distributed to needy families in southeastern Vermont through the Vermont Foodbank's network of food shelves.

The program is designed to help find better uses for surplus food that in some cases couldn't be sold at supermarkets.
