State Commission Says Vermont Discriminated on Pay

The Vermont Human Rights Commission has filed suit against the state over alleged gender discrimination it said showed up in a female Department of Corrections employee being paid significantly less than a man in the same job.

The commission said Thursday it had joined Lynne Silloway, an administrative services coordinator with the Corrections Department, in suing that department and the Department of Human Resources.

Robert Appel, executive director of the Human Rights Commission, says Silloway became aware in July 2010 that a male co-worker with the same title and duties and less seniority had an annual salary about $10,000 higher than hers.

Appel says the situation remains the same more than two years later, and that attempts to resolve it without going to court have failed.
