Vermont Fish and Wildlife Says Moose Hunt Successful

The Vermont Department of Fish and Wildlife says this fall's moose hunting seasons are helping to keep the state's moose herd in balance.

Preliminary statistics show that 17 moose were taken by archers during the seven-day archery season and 205 taken during the six-day rifle season.

Vermont moose biologist Cedric Alexander says the state's moose population is being managed scientifically, according to a plan developed on what he calls sound wildlife biology and input from the public.

He says hunters managed to meet the moose target in a part of the Northeast Kingdom's Essex County that was still overpopulated.

This year was Vermont's 20th modern moose hunt.
