Vermont Town Board Votes to Reverse Gun Ban

A Vermont town that had banned firearms in town-owned buildings has changed its mind.

The Brattleboro Reformer reports the Townshend selectboard had approved the ban on July 16. It applied to all town buildings including the office, highway garage, library and fire station. Only "authorized law-enforcement officers" were excluded.

The board rescinded the ban Monday after hearing opposition from gun-rights advocates and after being advised by the town attorney that the ban could not stand.

Townshend officials said they were trying to be proactive in approving the ban. They said there had been no gun incidents at the town office, but there had been a few residents who felt intimidated by firearms in the building.
