Funeral Held For Western Mass. Police Officer

A funeral service was held in Westfield Massachusetts Tuesday for a veteran police officer who was killed last week in an accident at a construction site. WAMC’s Paul Tuthill reports.

Among the thousands of mourners at the service were Governor Deval Patrick, Congressman Richard Neal, top local law enforcement officials and police officers from throughout New England.  Patrolman Jose Torres was remembered as a devoted family man, an avid Red Sox fan, who was twice decorated for heroism during his 27 year career as a Westfield Police Officer.  Torres, who leaves a wife and two sons, was struck by a dump truck while he was directing traffic last week  where a water line was being replaced under the street.  The circumstances are being investigated by OSHA.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
