City Councilors in Springfield Massachusetts are expected to take steps Monday to re-open three library branches closed due to budget cuts. WAMC”s Paul Tuthill reports
The city council, at a special meeting, is scheduled to take a final vote to authorize a $15 increase in the annual $75 fee for residential trash and curbside recycling services. Under an agreement with the administration of Mayor Sarno, $200,000 from the trash fee will be diverted to the city’s libraries. City Councilor Timothy Allen said it made no sense to close libraries given the city’s struggles with low literacy rates.
Library officials say if the council approves the funding Monday night the three branch libraries will reopen in September..
