GOP Illuzzi, Democrat Hoffer Vie in Vermont Auditor Race

A long-time Vermont state senator and a long-time, self-employed policy analyst are vying to fill the vacant job of state auditor.

The race between Republican Sen. Vincent Illuzzi of Derby and Burlington Democrat Doug Hoffer is Vermont's only statewide political race to fill an open seat.

Illuzzi is leaving the state Senate after 32 years. He says he's qualified to fill the office because of his knowledge of state government. One area he says he'd look for savings is in the way the state manages its computer systems.

Hoffer came to Vermont in 1988 to work for the city of Burlington. He worked under contract for the state auditor for five years. He's been a policy analyst for 19 years.

Hoffer says he'd conduct more audits in shorter time frames.
