On this week’s 51%, a psychologist helps manage stress amid the COVID-19 crisis; a singer/songwriters shares her addiction problems; and music interprets sea level rise.

The Institute for Disaster Mental Health at the State University of New York at New Paltz has put out a Psychological First Aid & Stress Management toolkit. The strategies are to help faculty, staff, students and others during the COVID-19 pandemic. I spoke with the director of the Institute, Dr. Amy Nitza. She says the toolkit, which appears as a 60-page PowerPoint presentation, is also in Spanish, with other languages to come. Just a warning that some listeners may find the discussion at the end of this interview about dying alone upsetting.

After bursting on the Twin Cities music scene as a teenager, singer songwriter Lydia Liza got a crash course in growing up. By her early 20s, she struggled with a serious addiction to alcohol. KFAI's Sheila Regan spoke with Liza about her process of finding sobriety.

On a recent 51% show, #1597, we featured an interview with Fran Schulberg, executive producer at Climate Music Project, a San Francisco-based organization that links musicians with scientists to produce songs about climate change. Now, we’ll hear from a composer and a scientist who worked together on a Climate Music piece that interprets sea level rise data. The duo discussed the collaborative process of composing the song, entitled “What If We…”, with 51%’s Elizabeth LoGiudice.

The song “What if We?...” premiered in Washington, DC.  To learn more about Climate Music, listen to our interview with Executive Producer Fran Schulberg on show #1597.

That’s our show for this week. Thanks to Tina Renick for production assistance. Our executive producer is Dr. Alan Chartock. Our theme music is Glow in the Dark by Kevin Bartlett.
