An exhibit detailing the Berkshires’ connections to America’s pastime is on display at the Berkshire Historical Society. It features more than 280 items from 90 private collections.Pittsfield is home to the first known written reference to baseball: in 1791 leaders proclaimed the game could not be played within 80 yards of a meeting house. As exhibit co-creator Kevin Larkin explains, the city is also home to one of the last remaining baseball stadiums with a wooden grandstand.

“When you get into Wahconah Park, Satchel Paige, Jim Thorpe, Goose Tatum – who was a basketball player, Hall of Famers like Carlton Fisk and Greg Maddux played up there,” Larkin said. “This area is very, very rich in baseball history.”

The exhibit will be up through May 2nd.
