On Town Meeting Day some Vermont towns will vote on resolutions that address climate change.
The 36 towns hope the resolutions help Vermont achieve its goal of 90 percent renewable energy by 2050. The Times Argus reports the effort is being led by the grassroots organization 350Vermont.
Organizers are also supporting a bill introduced by Democratic state Rep. Mary Sullivan that would prohibit building new fossil fuel infrastructure, with the exception of projects certified by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission. Proponents say the bill would reduce emissions and could stop an extension of the Vermont Gas Systems pipeline.
Town leaders say the resolutions are necessary because federal and state agencies aren't addressing climate change fast enough. Organizers hope to send a message to the Legislature.
