The Pittsfield City Council has expressed its view on a trade agreement between the U.S. and Pacific Rim countries. All 11 councilors voted to oppose the Trans-Pacific Partnership and similar trade deals Tuesday night. Vice President John Krol submitted the petition hoping it will spur other communities to take similar action.

“It may seem like this big international issue, but really it affects each and every one of us just like other trade deals in the past have negatively impacted us,” said Krol.

Northampton passed a similar resolution while Holyoke’s city council will take up the matter in April.

Krol submitted the petition with Councilor Pete White. Both are supporting Bernie Sanders for the Democratic presidential nomination who has opposed TPP.

Though it was signed in February, Congress must still approve the agreement.
