Connecticut’s U.S. senators say they have been urging President Obama to take the executive actions on background checks for gun sales he outlined Tuesday for months.Democrats Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal met with President Obama Monday ahead of the public address Tuesday during which he said anyone in the business of selling guns must be licensed and conduct background checks including on the internet and at gun shows. Murphy says he is sick and tired of the inaction by Congress.

“The actions that the President is taking today, well within his authority as the chief executive, will save lives,” said Murphy.

The Republican National Committee says the President is overstepping his authority while the NRA says the actions are ripe for abuse by the Obama administration.
