The home of the man who carried out the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary school has been demolished. Newtown Legislative Council Chair Mary Ann Jacob said Tuesday that the building was torn down on Monday.Plans call for leaving the property as open space.

The Newtown Board of Selectman endorsed the demolition in January. Several neighbors had asked for the 3,100-square-foot Colonial to be taken down, describing it as a constant reminder of the tragedy.

The town took ownership of the home in December 2014 when the deed was turned over at no cost by the bank that held the mortgage.

The gunman, Adam Lanza, killed his mother, Nancy Lanza, inside the house on the morning of Dec. 14, 2012, and drove to the elementary school where he gunned down 20 children and six adults before committing suicide.
