Albany’s fifth annual “Lantern Parade” will go on despite the pandemic.
“Light Up Albany—Lanterns for Hope” asks Capital Region residents and businesses to display battery-powered lanterns in their windows for the first seven nights of November. Lantern Parade founder Sarah Read: "In the past it brought people together as they would create and then display their lanterns as a parade in Washington Park. This year, as we know, has been all about innovation and finding different ways to connect as we physically distance. My hope is that by displaying lanterns in their homes and businesses this year, people will feel that same connectivity, community and warmth."

Albany Public Library is giving out 125 lantern-making kits this year.
Because of COVID safety concerns, no lantern-making workshops will be held this year in Albany Public Library (APL) buildings. However, APL is distributing 125 lantern kits on a first-come, first-serve basis that can be picked up at the Arbor Hill, Delaware or Pine Hills branches by appointment only. Register for a pick-up time at the APL Calendar website. A short video tutorial provides a supply list and shows how to make your own lantern.
