Dannemora Prison Staffers Sickened By Substance

New York state officials say 11 staffers at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora were hospitalized Friday morning after becoming sick when a substance was found in the mail room.

Governor Andrew Cuomo says while testing of the substance is ongoing, it’s believed to be fentanyl.

"The investigation into this incident continues, but one thing is clear: We must stamp out this fentanyl scourge before it claims another life," Gov. Cuomo said in a statement.

A specialized state police response team is investigating.

New York State Police said Friday morning the staffers were in stable condition at Champlain Valley Physicians’ Hospital in Plattsburgh.

In 2015, two inmates escaped the maximum security prison, leading to a weeks-long man hunt.
