A Great Barrington town board has approved a controversial affordable housing proposal on a brownfield site.By a 4 to 1 vote Monday, the Zoning Board of Appeals approved a 45-unit affordable housing project on the former New England Log Homes site at 100 Bridge St. Some residents raised concerns about contamination and having people live near the waste treatment plant. Tim Geller is executive director of the Community Development Corporation of South Berkshire, which is pursuing the project.
“Absolutely 100 percent of the site will be cleaned up,” Geller said. “We have a remediation plan that the strategy of which is approved by Mass. DEP [Massachusetts Department of Environmental Protection].
The ZBA granted approval with a list of conditions regarding permitting and project parameters. The CDC also plans to build market rate condominiums, commercial space and a public park at the site.
