The police chief in Hinsdale, Massachusetts is leaving one year after taking a position left open by the firing of the former top cop, adding flames to a political firestorm.The North Brookfield Select Board unanimously chose Mark Smith to serve as the town’s police chief. The former Granby police officer took over Hinsdale’s Police Department last July following the firing of Nancy Daniels, a decision that divided the town and helped spur the recall of Selectwoman Bonnie Conner last month. In January Smith said he had no issues stemming from town politics.
“I’ve always said that I won’t get involved in the politics part of it,” Smith said. “I’m here to run the police department for the townspeople of Hinsdale.”
The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission determined Daniels’ firing was retaliatory. She says seeking the open position is up for discussion.
