Supporters of a bill that would prohibit a government body from passing a law prohibiting access to abortions or the operation of an abortion clinic testified before the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee Tuesday.U.S. Senator Richard Blumenthal introduced theWomen’s Health Protection Act in November. The Connecticut Democrat says the purpose is to bar states from imposing unique requirements for abortion clinics that he says are aimed at preventing women’s access to quality healthcare. Blumenthal says the bill now has 30 co-sponsors in the Senate and more than 120 in the House.

“The odds in this very unfortunately dysfunctional Congress are against any measure no matter how well-merited and how strongly supported,” said Blumenthal after Tuesday’s hearing.

Roughly 200 laws in 27 states regarding abortion clinic safety have been enacted over the past three years.
