A New Hampshire-based company has withdrawn a proposal to create an incinerator ash dump at an abandoned quarry in Catskill, New York.
Wheelabrator Technologies wanted to lease the old quarry to re-purpose it as an ash landfill. Environmentalists were staunchly opposed and several public meetings were held in hopes of stopping the plan. In a letter dated June 11th, posted on the Town of Catskill website, the state Department of Environmental Conservation confirms reclamation and solid waste permits Wheelabrator applied for were withdrawn from consideration.
Environmentalists argued the project would have meant 445,000 tons of toxic waste being trucked in annually for the next 48 years.
