A former student opened fire with a semi-automatic rifle at a south Florida high school Wednesday, killing at least 17 people and sending hundreds of students fleeing into the streets. It was the nation's deadliest school shooting since a gunman attacked Sandy Hook elementary school in Newtown, Connecticut in 2012.  Dr. Amy Nitza is director of the Institute for Disaster Mental Health at the State University of New York at New Paltz. She spoke with WAMC’s Hudson Valley Bureau Chief Allison Dunne.

TheInstitute for Disaster Mental Health’s 15th Annual Conference in April will be focused on the Psychosocial Response to Mass Violence. It’s a topic, Nitza points out, that unfortunately is timely practically any year.
