Democrat Andrea Smyth has conceded the race for Rensselaer County Executive to New York state Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin. Behind by nearly a thousand votes on the night of the election, Smyth said she was going to wait for the absentee ballots to be counted.

She could not make up the margin Tuesday.

McLaughlin claimed victory on election night.

McLaughlin takes over for retiring Kathleen Jimino, a fellow Republican.
