Although her opponent has declared victory, Democrat Andrea Smyth said Tuesday night she will wait for all the votes to be counted in the close race for Rensselaer County Executive against Republican state Assemblyman Steve McLaughlin.

McLaughlin was leading by 949 votes with all precincts reporting Tuesday night.

Smyth, a political newcomer, is seeking to become the first Democrat to ever hold the office as 16-year incumbent Republican Kathy Jimino steps down at the end of the year.
