World Cup:
Belgium advanced to the knockout round with a 1-0 win over Russia, Algeria doubled up South Korea 4-2 for their first World Cup victory since 1982, and the United States scored a draw against Portugal tying at 2. The U.S. fell behind 1-0 just five minutes in and continued to trail until Jermaine Jones slammed a curling shot into the net in the 64th minute. Clint Dempsey put the Yanks ahead in the 81st minute, his second goal in two games. But the Americans had to settle for a the tie as Varela scored on a header in the fifth extra minute to keep Portugal alive in the tournament.
The outcome leaves the U.S. and Germany in a first-place tie in Group G with four points, three ahead of both Portugal and Ghana. The Americans will face Germany on Thursday, while Portugal takes on Ghana at the same time.
Golf, U.S. Open:
Michelle Wie has earned her first major victory. The 24-year old finished 2-under for a two-shot win over fellow-American Stacy Lewis at the U.S. Women's Open.
A 25-foot birdie putt on the 17th hole sent Wie to the title. She closed with an even-par 70, while Lewis had eight birdies in a round of 66.
NBA:
Two people with knowledge of the details say that Carmelo Anthony has informed the New York Knicks that he intends to become a free agent. Anthony had a Monday deadline to terminate the final year of his contract. He will be eligible to negotiate with teams starting July 1.
MLB:
In interleague play, Cincinnati edged Toronto 4-3.
In the American League, Baltimore shut out the Yankees 8-0, Boston slid past Oakland 7-6 in 10, Tampa Bay beat Houston 5-2, Detroit bested Cleveland 10-4, Seattle defeated Kansas City 2-1, Minnesota out hit the White Sox 6-5, and it was the Angels over Texas 5-2.
In National League, the Mets blew out Miami 11-5, Washington beat Atlanta 4-1, St. Louis defeated Philadelphia 5-3, Pittsburgh edged the Cubs 2-1, the Dodgers bested San Diego 2-1, Milwaukee topped Colorado 6-5, and it was San Francisco over Arizona 4-1.
WNBA:
Tulsa squeaked by Chicago 105-99 in overtime, New York beat Atlanta 85-78, San Antonio defeated Los Angeles 72-69, and it was Seattle over Washington 89-86 in overtime.
NASCAR:
Carl Edwards won the road course NASCAR race in Sonoma, California. He finished in front of Jeff Gordon and Dale Earnhardt Jr., with pole sitter Jamie McMurray fourth. Edwards held off a strong challenge from Gordon on the final lap.
