The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is calling for additional removal of toxic chemicals from a contaminated landfill site in Rensselaer County.
Local officials say the EPA has directed the removal of polychlorinated biphenyls – or PCBs – around the Dewey Loeffel Superfund Site in the Town of Nassau.
The site was used as a disposal facility for industrial waste during the 1950s and 1960s. It’s been blamed for the contamination of local waterways.
Nassau Supervisor Dave Fleming said in an email that “a prompt and effective clean-up is warrented.” He also thanked the community for its support for the remediation project.
This is the second action by EPA to remove PCBs from the area. Work is expected to be completed by fall 2018.
