Despite the cold temperatures forecast for the weekend, the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation is asking residents to avoid partially frozen bodies of water.

Due to a streak of warm days and rainfall, DEC says ice in the Adirondack region has thinned and poses a danger to ice fishermen, and snowmobilers and ATV riders.

DEC says no ice should be assumed safe without checking first. Individuals can check with their regional DEC office.
