New York is taking steps to accomplish Governor Andrew Cuomo's goal of generating half of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
Cuomo's administration says Monday that it will task the state's Public Service Commission with enforcing the 50 percent target. About 26 percent of the state's power now comes from renewable sources.
Cuomo is expected to make reducing emissions and boosting green energy a focus of his state-of-the-state address in January, a speech used to lay out priorities for the state budget and the coming year.
Environmentalist groups praised the effort to make Cuomo's goal a reality.
Former Vice President Al Gore says the move is "terrific and bold" and will help build "essential momentum" ahead of the climate talks in Paris.
