Great Barrington Turning Lake Mansfield Road Into One-Way

Great Barrington, Massachusetts announced Thursday that a much discussed road project is taking another step forward.

After work begins this week, traffic will soon only run one-way, from south to north, on Lake Mansfield Road in the southern Berkshire County community. The road runs along the eastern shore of the similarly named body of water just north of the town’s core.

“It’s divided. On one side of it is traffic, the other side is pedestrians, bikers, and things like that," said Selectboard member Ed Abrahams. "It’ll be like that until it’s ultimately closed, torn up, and turned into whatever it will ultimately be.”

The town’s Lake Mansfield Improvement Task Force released a report in June calling for the road to be turned into a recreation path closed to cars in order to protect the lake. In the fall, Great Barrington repaved the decaying roadway at a cost of around $50,000.
