Cheryl Clapprood has been named Springfield’s permanent police commissioner. Clapprood, who has been on the force for four decades, has been acting commissioner since February following the abrupt resignation of John Barbieri.

“I try to be consistent in what I look for,” Clapprood said in a press conference Friday carried by WWLP-TV. “I try to be fair. I’ve been through a few things here in my career, good and bad, indifferent and up and down so there’s not too much you can go through that I don’t understand.”

Mayor Domenic Sarno says Clapprood has signed a four-year contract to lead the 400-member department. Sarno says an official swearing-in ceremony will be scheduled "very shortly."
