A nationally-recognized child literacy program in western Massachusetts has a new manager.

Chrissy Howard will run the Springfield City Library’s Reading Success by 4th Grade initiative.

The library assumed management of the program earlier this year from the Davis Foundation.

The Springfield-based philanthropy began the effort in 2009 to raise the level of 3rd grade reading proficiency in the city’s public schools, which at the time was 28 percent.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke with Howard.

The record-setting tenure of Springfield Mayor Domenic Sarno. The 2011 tornado and its recovery that remade the largest city in Western Massachusetts. The fallout from the deadly COVID outbreak at the Holyoke Soldiers Home. Those are just a few of the thousands and thousands of stories WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill has covered for WAMC in his nearly 17 years with the station.
