The Massachusetts State Senate has a new leader.

After a day of extraordinary drama and closed door meetings that lasted hours, Senators met in a special session Monday night to elect Democrat Harriette Chandler of Worcester as acting president.

The Senate also authorized an Ethics Committee investigation into now former Senate President Stan Rosenberg of Amherst.

The investigation will look into whether Rosenberg’s husband Bryon Hefner had any influence over Senate business.

Prosecutors plan to investigate Hefner for alleged sexual assaults.

Rosenberg took an unprecedented leave of absence as Senate President.

WAMC’s Pioneer Valley Bureau Chief Paul Tuthill spoke this morning with the new Senate leader.
