The Great Barrington Police Department has closed an investigation into an alleged racial incident at Monument Mountain Regional High School.

The department says two students got into an argument September 26th involving racist comments stemming from a varsity football player’s decision to kneel during the national anthem. Working with state and federal agencies, officers concluded the words did not amount to hate speech or a prosecutable offense.

Professional and amateur athletes have kneeled during the national anthem to protest police killings of African Americans.
