The Vermont Senate has passed a bill calling for paid sick leave for workers, after deciding against exempting employers with fewer than five workers.
The Senate action Wednesday came on legislation passed earlier in the House. It remains to be seen whether the House will go along with Senate changes, or if the bill will have to go to a conference committee.
The Senate made the bill somewhat more business-friendly. Workers will accrue an hour of paid leave for each 52 hours worked, versus the House-passed requirement that the worker put in 40 hours to earn an hour of leave.
The Senate narrowly rejected an amendment calling for employers with fewer than five workers to be exempted from the requirement that they offer paid sick leave.
