A public hearing on a proposed hotel that would repurpose a former school in downtown Great Barrington continues Wednesday night. The Great Barrington Select Board will pick up where it left off last month with a contentious public hearing on a proposed hotel at the former Searles School. After concerns were expressed about the destruction of the building’s features, plans were tweaked to reduce the number of rooms from 95 to 88 and preserve more of the 19th century building.

“It’ll have the kind of impact that the Red Lion Inn has in downtown Stockbridge,” said Dave Carpenter, director of administration for the developers, Mahida Family Hospitality Interests.

The Select Board must approve the project’s application before work can start. The meeting starts at 7 p.m. at Monument Mountain Regional High School.
