Community Health Programs and Berkshire Health Systems have announced federal funding to support an expansion of primary care access for people in the Northern Berkshires.

A two-year Health and Human Services grant is supporting the creation of a Federally Qualified Health Center with locations in North Adams and Adams. Berkshire Health Systems spokesman Michael Leary says the center is given specific federal qualifications.

“That allow it to provide care specifically to those who are lower income, those who might not have insurance or might be underinsured,” Leary said. “But the FQHCs are open to anybody.”

Northern Berkshire Family Medicine and Adams Internists are joining Community Health Programs which has offices in Pittsfield and Great Barrington. The family medicine practice will move to the former North Adams Regional Hospital now run by BHS sometime this fall.
