Berkshire Medical Center is restoring mammography services to Northern Berkshire County following the closure of North Adams Regional Hospital in March. The department will be fully operational December 1st.The $290,000 breast cancer screening equipment at BMC’s Northern Berkshire site will link to the hospital’s radiology department at its main campus in Pittsfield where any potential follow-ups will be handled. Spokesman Michael Leary says two screening technicians in North Adams expect to see 20 patients per day.

“We do know that a number of people had been waiting for mammography to take place at North Adams so that they could have their exams scheduled,” Leary said. “As a result, even under a very soft launch, we’re already booked out until the end of January.”

The hospital’s board is still assessing whether to pursue a critical access designation for inpatient services at the North Adams campus.
