The owner of Vermont Yankee has taken a step to fulfill one of the items in an agreement with the state leading to the shut down of the nuclear power plant.
In a settlement agreement released December 23rd, 2013, state officials and Entergy agreed that the company would create a plan to have all approvals in place to move spent fuel to dry cask by the end of 2021. Entergy also agreed to seek permission from the state Public Service Board for an expanded spent fuel storage pad “no later than June 30, 2014". Monday, Entergy submitted its formal petition for a second concrete pad at the plant.
It has provided a required 45 day advance notice to the Vernon Board of Selectmen, the Vernon Planning Commission and the Windham Regional Commission. The move is the next phase of the regulatory process as the company moves to shut down the plant at the end of 2014.
