The Vermont Gas pipeline is getting some strong support from two Rutland business organizations.

The company just got its last permits to bring the natural gas pipeline from Colchester to Middlebury. It has started planning for Phase 2, which would extend the line under Lake Champlain to International Paper in Ticonderoga, New York.

The Rutland Herald reports Rutland Economic Development Corp. and the Rutland Region Chamber of Commerce sent a letter to Vermont Gas CEO Don Gilbert, asking for preliminary work on Phase 3 to bring the pipeline to Rutland.

They've asked for preferred route by the end of the year.

Company spokesman Steve Wark said the company shares the goals of the organizations. He said the company has committed to Rutland by 2020, if the regulatory process allows it.
