A critic of Vermont's health care reform efforts says the governor's recommitment to creating the nation's first single payer health care system is a threat to the Vermont economy.

Darcie Johnston of the group Vermonters for Health Care Freedom says Vermont is not a country and if any calculations used to create the system are wrong, it could be cataclysmic to the economy.

She was responding to comments Tuesday by Governor Peter Shumlin, who said Vermont's efforts to create the nation's first single-payer health care system need to continue.

Shumlin says there needs to be a complete remaking of the health care system; he called current efforts "nibbling around the edges."

Vermont is scheduled to implement the single payer system in 2017.
