Federal funding will help improve safety at one of the busiest grade crossings along Metro-North Railroad’s routes in New York’s Hudson Valley.
The Department of Transportation’s Federal Railroad Administration is providing $2 million for Peekskill to improve the Hudson Avenue grade crossing. The funding will go toward replacing the 40-year-old warning system and crossing gates. It will also fund the addition of accessible pedestrian walkways and gates, improving access to Peekskill Station and an adjacent park. New York U.S. Senators Charles Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand announced the funding. Rail-grade crossings elsewhere in the Hudson Valley have been the site of serious accidents, including in 2015 when a Metro-North commuter train collided with an SUV at a grade crossing in Valhalla.
