Legislation introduced by New York’s two U.S. Senators to rename a post office in honor of a former Hudson Valley congressman has passed in their chamber.
Senate Minority Leader Charles Schumer and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand say legislation they introduced in February to rename a Middletown post office after late Congressman Benjamin Gilman has passed the Senate. They say naming the Middletown Post Office on Fulton Street after the Republican congressman who served from 1972-2003 would be a fitting tribute. Gilman, who had chaired the House Committee on Foreign Affairs and founded the House Human Rights Caucus, worked behind the scenes to help free political prisoners from oppressive regimes. Gilman had also served in the state Assembly.
